At some point, I guess we were supposed to grow out of this stuff.
We were supposed to get older, get more responsible, find more “grown-up” hobbies, and stop getting excited about little cars that burn fuel, make too much noise, and occasionally send us walking halfway across a field because something broke.
Yeah… that didn’t happen.
And honestly, I’m glad it didn’t.
I’ve been into RC cars for years. Long enough to have collected cars I wanted, cars I probably didn’t need, and projects I was definitely going to get around to someday.
Some of them have been run hard. Some have spent more time sitting than running. And some are still waiting for me to finally give them the attention I promised them.
But I still love this hobby.
Maybe it’s because we get to tinker
There’s something satisfying about having a machine sitting in front of you and knowing that you can mess with it.
You can tune it.
Take it apart.
Put it back together.
Change something just because you’re curious whether it’ll make a difference.
And with nitro, there’s always something to mess with.
Sometimes that means getting the tune just right.
Sometimes it means standing there wondering why the thing ran perfectly the last time you touched it and now suddenly wants nothing to do with you.
That’s part of the fun too.
Well…
Maybe not while it’s happening.
Maybe RC reminds us of being kids
I think there’s a little bit of that in it too.
Before bills.
Before schedules.
Before every free hour seemed to have something attached to it.
You grabbed the car, went outside, and had fun.
That was enough.
I don’t think we lose that part of ourselves when we get older. We just get better at burying it underneath everything else we’re responsible for.
Then you fire up an RC car.
For a little while, none of that other stuff matters.
You’re paying attention to the car.
You’re listening to the engine.
You’re trying to hit that corner a little cleaner than you did last time.
You’re just… having fun.
And grown men probably don’t give themselves permission to do enough of that.
And maybe that’s really the answer
Maybe we still love RC cars because not everything in our lives needs to accomplish something.
Not everything needs to make money.
Not everything needs to be productive.
Sometimes you need something that makes you walk into the garage, look at a car sitting on the bench and think:
You know what? I should get that thing running again.
Then three hours later you’ve got tools everywhere, parts all over the bench, and you’ve somehow created two new problems while fixing the original one.
But you’re having a good time.
That’s RC.
At least it is for me.
I don’t know how long I’ll keep collecting these things. Judging by the amount of stuff already sitting in my garage, I probably shouldn’t be allowed to answer that question.
But I know this.
I still get excited when an engine fires.
I still like seeing a car come back to life after sitting for years.
I still like tinkering with something until it finally runs right.
And I still get that same feeling when I put one on the ground, pull the trigger, and watch it take off.
So why do grown men still love RC cars?
I don’t think it’s because we never grew up.
I think it’s because some things are worth not growing out of.
And RC might just be one of them.
What about you?
What keeps you in the hobby?
Is it the cars? The building? The tuning? The memories? Or is it just one of the few things you can still do purely because you enjoy it?
Whatever your reason is, I’d genuinely like to hear it.
That’s kind of what I want Nitro RC Guy to become anyway. Not just a place where I talk about RC cars, but a place where we can hang out, talk about the hobby, and occasionally wander into whatever else comes up along the way.
